“Othoi” is a Bengali romantic thriller film. It was released in theatres on June 14, 2024, and later on a Bengali OTT platform. The film stars Anirban Bhattacharya, Arna Mukhopadhyay, and Sohini Sarkar. It is a modern version of Shakespeare’s famous play Othello.
Movie Story:
The story takes place in a village called Vinsura. It is a beautiful but troubled village. A boy named Othoi comes to the village with his widowed mother. Since childhood, Othoi has faced discrimination and cruelty. His grandmother was burned alive for being called a witch. His mother later died from poverty and hunger.
After her death, the village landlord took Othoi into his home. The landlord was also Gogo’s father. Though Othoi was not his real son, he helped him grow up with education and values. But Othoi still had to wear Gogo’s old clothes and eat leftover food. Even then, Othoi became better than Gogo in studies, sports, career, and love.
This made Gogo jealous. Both later became doctors. Gogo went to America for cancer research. Othoi wanted to build a low-cost clinic for poor people in his village.
In Kolkata, Othoi met Diya. They fell in love and got married, but Diya’s father did not approve. He cursed their relationship.
Gogo returned from America and tricked Othoi. He made him think Diya was cheating on him. Othoi believed him and killed Diya in anger. Later, he found out it was all Gogo’s plan. Full of guilt, Othoi ended his own life.
The film shows how jealousy and manipulation can destroy love and trust. It also highlights issues like caste, poverty, and social injustice.
